History & Glossary

Ancient Olympia grew to be the most celebrated sacred site of Ancient Greece, and the birthplace of the Olympic Games, the most important sports events in all antiquity.starting from 776 B.C., all Greeks – across the then known world – would be united every four years and all hostilities would be suspended so that everyone could take part in these games in the true spirit of sportsmanship. Olympia is now, as it used to be in the past, a famed destination, a powerful landmark known the world over.

Olympic Games were an athletic festival that originated in ancient Greece and was revived in the late 19th century. They occurred in Greece almost 3,000 years ago. Held every four years between August 6 and September 19, they occupied such an important place in Greek history that in late antiquity historians measured time by the interval between them—an Olympiad. The Olympic Games, like almost all Greek games, were an intrinsic part of a religious festival. They were held in honor of Zeus at Olympia.

Greek honey is considered the best in the world, as Greece has a long history of bee-keeping and there are more beehives per acre in Greece than any other country in Europe. A wide biodiversity of flora combined with the Aegean summer sun is what helps produce this unique golden nectar. Honey is the first traditional sweetener used by Greeks since antiquity. In fact, honey along with olives and grapes formed the beginnings of Greek gastronomy. Greek honey is one of the most nutritional, natural foods, filled with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Honey contains anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal substances and has also been used for centuries as a treatment for sore throats and coughs, minor burns, cuts and other bacterial infections.

Tzatziki is a greek dip/ sauce, made of salted strained yogurt  mixed with cucumbers, garlic, salt, olive oil, sometimes with vinegar or lemon juice, and herbs such as dill, mint, parsley and thyme. It is served as a cold appetizer, a side dish, and as a sauce for souvlaki, sandwiches and other dishes.
